‘Pragmatism’ series#7: “Building the Bridge of Belief and Persistence

An emotional journey is not complete without building the bridge of belief and persistence. The bridge built is to overcome the rough patch and accomplish great results.

The above was an inference from an infographic image (source: online). It triggered me to connect to my emotional journey that witnessed a few bridges built during tough times.

Impact of Music:

The desire to listen to a song or music is one of our top needs. Listening to music will not only change the mood but can even change the way we perceive the world. Neuroscientist across the globe have concluded the existence of a strong connection between Music and the Brain. The study explores how music impacts brain function and human behavior.

During an MRI study, the impact was observed through different parts of the brain lighting up. Research indicates various music forms — rock ’n’ roll, jazz, hip-hop, or classical, the gray matter prefers the same music, again and again. When a piece of favorite music is listened to, different parts of the brain light up, which means memories associated with music are emotional memories, which never fade out — even in Alzheimer’s patients.

Building the Bridge:

Songs has the ability to influence our emotions. Two songs shaped up my mindset through 2020 and into 2021 . Especially a few lines from the lyrics of both had a positive impact. Undoubtedly, listening to it often kept me afloat without immersing in the sea of anxiety. An avid music lover that I am, among the thousands of songs in my playlist, those two songs were unique and connected instantly to the situation.

I took the liberty to internalize the lyrical meaning as the way I perceived it to be and associated very few lines positively to my advantage.

Indeed, the crux were a few lines or words in the song echoing mentally that frequently helped me overcome strenuous times in 2020. It acted as fuel to believe that together we will cross this phase with ease, and hearing it, again and again, was a reminder of the thought of Crossing over the bridge of strenuous times persistently.

The first three lines from the song Hold my hand by MJ made me realize things are temporary, respect for each other, and being grateful is the ultimate truth.

“This life don’t last forever (hold my hand)

So tell me what we’re waiting for (hold my hand)

We’re Better off being together (hold my hand)”

This thought pre-dominantly occupied and shaped my mindset to build the bridge of belief to overcome the anxieties and persist to being alive through 2020.

The last three lines from the song Afterglow by Ed Sheeran made me realize how important it is to keep building the bridge of belief and persistence until we see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“I will hold on tighter ’til the afterglow

And we’ll burn so bright ’til the darkness softly clears

Oh, I will hold on to the afterglow”

Afterglow is the keyword akin to accomplishing great things.

It is a personal experience to showcase how music can play a prominent role in calming the nerves, and if not for the complete lyrics of a song, even a few lines or words from it can inspire to overcome anxieties.

What is the bridge to belief and persistence; the words of inspiration from the lyrics is to me.
